Learner Spotlight: Maggie Blower

“You’re Never Too Old to Learn”

Talking to our Learning & Development Coach Wendy Johnson this week is Maggie Blower, Deputy Manager at Lowmoor Nursing Home.

Maggie has spent over 25 years in nursing, dedicating her career to caring for vulnerable people.

Now completing the Level 3 Safeguarding Support Officer Apprenticeship, she continues to prove that learning has no age limit - and that knowledge can transform both professional practice and personal purpose.

After losing her husband of more than 50 years, Maggie found strength through returning to learning and focusing on advocacy for others.

“When my husband passed away… until I started doing this course, the things that I’ve done since are not things I thought I would be capable of.”

Why Maggie Chose the Apprenticeship

For Maggie, the decision to enrol was driven by her passion for protecting residents and keeping her knowledge current.

“There’s so much regarding safeguarding and it changes all the time. Until you do a course like this, you don’t realise how much there is.”

She explains that the learning has had an immediate impact on her practice.

“It’s about the learning… the research we do… to be able to put things into place with the people we care for.”

Growing Confidence and Finding Her Voice

The apprenticeship has strengthened Maggie’s confidence to challenge decisions and advocate more strongly for residents.

“I’ve grown in confidence… I can put my point across.”

She is particularly proud that she continues to achieve academically later in life.

“At nearly 70 years old, I can still learn things… and put things into place with people to keep them safe.”

Turning Grief into Advocacy

Since starting the course, Maggie has expanded her impact beyond the workplace - becoming a Dementia Friend, joining community initiatives, and training to become an advocate.

“I just think I should be fighting in people’s corners… giving them a voice.”

She says having a purpose is what keeps her motivated.

“When I come to work, I’ve got a purpose… I can do the best that I can for the people that I look after.”

Running a care service means being prepared for almost anything. A member of staff calls in sick. A family needs reassurance. A care plan needs updating. An inspection is approaching. Somebody cannot find the medication keys, although everyone is absolutely certain they put them “in the usual place”. And through all of this, the people you support still need safe, compassionate and consistent care. It is hardly surprising that workforce development sometimes slips down the list. Training gets booked when a certificate is about to expire, when a new requirement appears or when an incident reveals a gap that nobody realised was there. But the strongest care organisations do not only train when something goes wrong. They build knowledgeable, confident teams before it does. That requires more than access to a few online modules and a spreadsheet showing who completed what. It requires a training partner that understands the pressures care employers face and can help turn workforce development into something practical, purposeful and manageable.

Most people only think about their business network when something stops working. The Wi-Fi drops during an important meeting. Critical systems crash. Emails have stopped sending. Or a cyber attack disrupts operations. That's usually when someone says, "Can someone from IT fix this?" Behind every productive business is a reliable IT network, and behind every reliable network is a skilled Network Engineer keeping systems connected, secure, and operating efficiently. As organisations become increasingly dependent on cloud computing, hybrid working, digital communication, and cybersecurity, investing in skilled Network Engineers has become essential rather than optional.
